Finally, on Sunday, February 28 at 8 p.m., awards season kicks off with the 78th Annual Golden Globes. Although the event will take place about two months later than usual and will lack the typical red carpet part of the program (Thanks, coronavirus!), we are still anticipating the evening and all of the celebrities’ diamond jewelry that comes with it.

So what can we expect for the big night ahead? Word is, a hybrid of on-location and remote coverage. Hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will be broadcasting from New York’s Rainbow Room and the Beverly Hills Hotel respectively. Presenters including Awkwafina, Cynthia Erivo, Kristen Wiig and Renée Zellweger will be on location, while most of the nominees will be checking in from remote spots.

Speaking of nominees… Big-screen stars Viola Davis (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), Kate Hudson (Music), Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman), Michelle Pfeiffer (French Exit), Rosamund Pike (I Care A Lot) and Amanda Seyfried (Mank) are all expected to make appearances.

In the television category some of the stylish ladies we are eager to see include Gillian Anderson (The Crown), Cate Blanchett (Mrs. America), Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Lily Collins (Emily in Paris), Emma Corrin (The Crown) Kaley Cuoco (The Flight Attendant), Elle Fanning (The Great), Nicole Kidman (The Undoing), Cynthia Nixon (Ratched), Sarah Paulson (Ratched) and Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit).

To set the mood for the big show, we are taking a look back at 11 of the best diamond jewels ever worn at the Golden Globes. See our favorite looks from the last several years below.

Zoë Kravitz in Lorraine Schwartz, 2020

Zoë Kravitz loves big gemmy jewels as much as the cool gold thread hoops she wears in her multiple ear piercings. At the 2020 Golden Globes, the star coordinated her black and white polka dot Saint Laurent off the shoulder gown with earrings that looked like giant polka dots. The jaw-dropping 32 carat diamond and black jade studs were by Lorraine Schwartz.

Gwyneth Paltrow in Bulgari, 2020

Gwyneth Paltrow is fearless about taking risks on the red carpet. At the 2020 Golden Globes, the Goop founder wore a brown sheer tulle Fendi gown with a matched underlayer composed of what was essentially a boy short and bra. She added shine to the ensemble with two Bulgari Fiorever High Jewelry diamond necklaces worn underneath the sheer section of her décolleté. The clever styling garnered a lot of attention, because no one could recall anyone doing anything like it in the past. Paltrow also wore long diamond earrings from the Italian jeweler.

Lady Gaga in Tiffany, 2019

Lady Gaga’s Awards Season circuit for A Star Is Born was an epic parade of astonishing fashion and jewelry. For the Golden Globes, Gaga looked regal in a lavender Valentino gown and dyed her hair to match the color. She glittered in Tiffany cluster earrings and the 100 carat Aurora Necklace that was custom made for her to wear at the event.  “What could be more fitting than this exquisite custom piece, named after the goddess of dawn and a cluster of stars, to mark Lady Gaga’s wonderful work in A Star is Born?” asked the star’s stylists, Sandra Amador and Tom Eerebout at the time.

Viola Davis in Harry Winston, 2018

At the 2018 Golden Globes, Vogue noted Viola Davis was among the evening’s beauty standouts, saying, “Rocking her natural hair in a voluminous Afro, she debuted a fresh look while projecting the supernatural poise she’s become known for.” The star lit up her glorious locks and black Brandon Maxwell gown with Harry Winston 8 carat round brilliant cut diamond studs and Secret Combination Necklace. The “secret” of the jewel is that it looks like several necklaces but it is one artfully laid out design.

Emma Stone in Tiffany, 2017

At the 2017 Golden Globes, Emma Stone referenced the magical Griffith Observatory moment in La La Land with the metallic stars covering her Valentino light pink dress. The Best Actress winner, paired the dreamy gown with a romantic vintage diamond and platinum necklace featuring a delicate openwork pattern made by Tiffany around 1909.

Priyanka Chopra in Lorraine Schwartz, 2017

At the 2017 Golden Globes, jewelry designer Lorraine Schwartz put a fresh spin on the classic combination of large diamond pendants on a simple diamond necklace in the piece she made for Priyanka Chopra. The designer set a 45 carat emerald cut diamond pendant at the end of an elegant long diamond necklace that spread just a bit wider across the front of Chopra’s chest. The extra length and width gave the piece the appearance of a renaissance style. Chopra added to the elegance by wearing it with a gold Ralph Lauren Collection dress.

Jennifer Lopez in Harry Winston, 2016

Layering two grand diamond necklaces may not be a look seen too often—if ever—in everyday life, but on the red carpet it is a stylish staple. In 2016, Jennifer Lopez layered two necklaces from Harry Winston. One was a cascading drop diamond necklace; the other, a classic holly wreath design. Lopez wore the sensational jewels with a regal caped Giambattista Valli yellow gown.

Jennifer Lawrence in Chopard, 2016

At first glance, the diamond necklace Jennifer Lawrence wore to the 2016 Golden Globes looked like it could have been part of her minimalist red cut-out Dior gown. But in fact, it was one of Chopard’s signature mesh diamond bib designs. The fabric-like piece was composed of 156.77 carats of diamonds.

Naomi Watts in Bulgari, 2015

At the 2015 Golden Globes, the press cracked fun of the fact that Naomi Watts tossed on a Bulgari diamond Serpenti necklace she had donned several times before. But really it was a silly point: clearly Watts loved the jewel and wore it with ease, a stunning feat for a treasure featuring more than 77 carats of diamonds. Watts’s confidence, as well as a sunshine yellow Gucci gown, made for one of her best red carpet looks ever.

Jessica Chastain in Bulgari, 2014

Every once in a while, Bulgari loans out massive historic jewels from its archive collection. At the 2014 Golden Globes, Jessica Chastain wore one of the most dazzling, a 137 carat Art Deco diamond necklace. Although the piece had been down the carpet one time before when Jennifer Aniston wore it to the Oscars in 2006, it looked different entirely on Chastain, who pulled the long piece up and draped half down her back atop a strapless black Givenchy gown.

Jessica Alba in Harry Winston, 2013

At the 2013 Golden Globes, Jessica Alba was one of the last women to hit the red carpet.  Following a parade of gorgeous jewels, she turned up in a $5.8 million Harry Winston diamond necklace, which outdid everything beforehand.  Though the jeweled necklace was the type you would normally see at the Oscars, or at very least on someone with a Globes nomination, Alba just chose to wear it to complement her peach Oscar de la Renta gown. At the time, coverage reported that the light reflecting from the stones almost blinded the photographers.
