Simple Engagement Rings Prove Less Really Is More

Maximalism may be everywhere online, but when it comes to engagement rings, many people are moving in the opposite direction. Simple engagement rings are proving that the most memorable designs don’t have to be the loudest.
Whether it’s a sleek bezel setting or a knife-edge solitaire, simple engagement rings don’t command attention – they draw the eye in (and let it linger an extra second or two as the diamond catches a ray of light). It’s low-key yet luxurious, minimal yet impactful. It stacks beautifully and never looks out of place. And it’s exactly those qualities that are making brides fall in love with simple engagement rings all over again.
“We’re seeing a shift toward quiet luxury after years of designs that felt more bold and attention-grabbing,” says Chelsea Gabrielle, founder and designer at Chelsea Gabrielle. “People are gravitating toward pieces that feel refined, timeless, and effortlessly elegant.”
As Gabrielle notes, there’s currently a growing appreciation for understated beauty and rings that let two things speak for themselves: exceptional craftsmanship and a beautiful diamond. “It feels very classic, very European, and ultimately much more enduring than following trends.”
Meet the Experts

Marisa Perry is the co-founder of Marisa Perry Atelier, a highly coveted destination for fine jewelry, particularly engagement rings and wedding bands. She was one of the first women to design, manufacture, and sell direct-to-consumer in the luxury goods field, refusing to compromise on quality and craftsmanship.

Chelsea Gabrielle is the founder and designer of Chelsea Gabrielle. A lifelong obsession with form, precision, and the mechanics of motion defines her design philosophy. With that perspective, she set out to reinterpret a classic setting: the bezel. Rather than locking a diamond in place, she reimagined it with movement in mind — freeing the stone and allowing it to come alive.

What Makes Simple Engagement Rings So Timeless

The term “simple engagement ring” may evoke images of dainty bands and petite diamonds, but that’s a bit of a misconception, as simple doesn’t always mean small. “You can have a large center stone and still have a beautifully simple ring if the setting is clean and understated,” says Gabrielle.
What does that mean in terms of design choices? “The absence of pavé on the band or around the stone, and less intricate engraving with very clean lines,” says Marisa Perry, co-founder of Marisa Perry Atelier. As Gabrielle adds, it’s really about “restraint in the design” that allows the diamond to be the focal point.
Another misconception is that simple engagement rings are always solitaires. There are ornate solitaire settings that wouldn’t necessarily be described as simple, just like there are simple three-stone or multi-stone styles that perfectly marry elegance and luxury.

Take, for example, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s engagement ring from John F Kennedy Jr, a sapphire and diamond eternity ring inspired by one of Jackie Kennedy’s rings. Its pared-back design perfectly matched Bessette-Kennedy’s iconic minimalist style, exuding sophistication without being overly flashy. The piece was also a unique choice for an engagement ring, proving that simple doesn’t have to mean traditional.
The Quiet Power of a Simple Engagement Ring

Zendaya’s engagement ring is another high-profile example of a simple ring that is anything but basic. When the actress first wore her ring, a Georgian-era inspired “button-back” style featuring a five-carat cushion cut diamond set east-west on a gold band, the internet went wild – and that is the power of a simple engagement ring in action.
Still undecided about whether you’d prefer something a little bolder? Below are a few of the factors that make simple engagement rings incredibly alluring (and never boring).
It Never Goes Out of Style
If you want an engagement ring that will age well and outlast trends, simplicity is your best bet. As Gabrielle puts it, “a well-designed simple engagement ring never feels dated.”
“Simple designs have a classic quality that transcends trends, so they’re just as beautiful decades from now as they are today,” she adds. You can thank their clean silhouettes and balanced proportions for that.
It Feels Effortlessly Elegant

Sofia Richie Grainge, who many would call the poster girl of today’s quiet luxury aesthetic, perfectly illustrates how elegant a simple engagement ring can be. Her emerald-cut solitaire, which is estimated to be around five or six carats, is set on a luxe platinum band and still inspires brides with its subdued sophistication.
It Works With Everything
A simple engagement ring always looks tasteful and elevates any look, effortlessly transitioning between day and night, casual and formal settings, and professional and personal occasions. The best part? Your style is likely to evolve throughout the years, and a simple engagement ring will evolve with you, as Gabrielle notes.
Whether you’re the type to stack jewelry or prefer heading out the door wearing only your engagement ring and wedding band, simple engagement rings are easy to wear – and they work with a variety of wedding bands.
“I love the fact that a simple engagement ring allows for many more options in a wedding band. The wearer can choose from hundreds of styles of wedding bands that will complement the ring perfectly. More ornate rings can often present limitations on which bands look well with it,” says Perry.
The Diamond Is the Main Character

A simple engagement ring puts the spotlight on the unique character, beauty, and brilliance of a natural diamond, regardless of the exact cut of the stone. Gabrielle loves round brilliant and cushion-cut diamonds in a simple setting, as they’re both “timeless, elegant shapes that never go out of style.”
Step cuts like emerald-cut diamonds and elongated cuts like pear shapes are beautiful in plain solitaire settings too, says Perry: “The stones themselves are so stunning that they don’t need a lot of accents.”
How to Find the Right Simple Engagement Ring

So, what exactly do you look for when buying a simple engagement ring? With a minimal setting, you have to pay close attention to the craftsmanship behind the design, and that comes down to the intentional touches that give a ring that high-quality feel – think, balanced proportions that feel right on the hand and a well-cut, well-set diamond.
“When the design is simple, every detail matters,” says Gabrielle, who always encourages clients to inspect details like prongs. “Since there are fewer design elements to distract the eye, quality becomes even more apparent. Investing in excellent craftsmanship and a beautifully cut diamond will always outlast trends.”
How can you tell that a diamond is well cut? With a round brilliant, you can refer to the cut grade on its GIA diamond grading report – it’s currently the only diamond shape that receives an official, standardized cut grade. To evaluate other diamond cuts, which are called fancy shapes, look at how a stone interacts with the light. The diamond should look bright and lively across all its surfaces.
One of the most enjoyable parts of the process is choosing a diamond that speaks to you. Again, remember that simple doesn’t mean going with a round brilliant, which is the best-selling diamond shape of all time, thanks to its ability to reflect light and complement a variety of settings. It’s a wonderful, classic choice, but it certainly isn’t the only one. “Just because you are doing a simple solitaire setting, does not mean that your stone shape should be simple. You can even do something unique, like a kite-shaped center stone,” says Perry.
According to her, the key to making the right choice is asking yourself one question: What do I want to look down on every day for the rest of my life? Then, go with what you love, not what’s in fashion. Maybe you’re obsessed with oval diamonds or love the architectural vibe of an Asscher cut. Either way, “pick the stone that makes your heart sing!” suggests Perry.
