Pink diamond rings have become a favorite among A-list celebrities, symbolizing both rarity, feminity and elegance.

Jennifer Lopez’s robust engagement ring collection has featured natural diamonds spanning all the colors of the rainbow. But what kicked off her assortment was a Harry Winston 6.1-carat fancy intense radiant-cut pink diamond ring from Ben Affleck in 2002.

The ring ignited a pink diamond obsession. Tennis champion Anna Kournikova, Blake Lively, and Victoria Beckham, have all followed suit with thier own exquisite pink diamond rings, showcasing their unique take on this luxurious trend. Now, Lauren Sánchez has hopped on the pink diamond bandwagon. No other stones in the world can match the precious nature and magnificent beauty of pink diamonds.

What Is a Pink Diamond?

Pink diamonds are naturally colored diamonds that appear in a spectrum of shades, ranging from subtle blush hues to vibrant magenta. Other colored diamonds get their hue from chemical impurities, but the exact cause of their color remains a mystery. This rare and unexplained coloration, combined with the diamond’s natural brilliance, gives them an unmatched allure in the world of gemstones.

How Are Pink Diamonds Created?

The rarity of pink diamonds stems from the extreme conditions required for their formation. While all natural diamonds form under intense heat and pressure deep within the Earth over billions of years, these remarkable pink gems undergo an additional process of immense pressure that alters their internal structure. The leading theory is that this structural distortion, known as plastic deformation, affects how light interacts with the stone, giving it a pink color. However, this extraordinary process also means that many do not survive formation, and those that do are often small or contain inclusions, making high-quality specimens exceedingly rare.

Where Are Pink Diamonds Found?

For decades, the vast majority of the world’s supply came from a single source: Australia’s Argyle Mine, located in the remote East Kimberley region of Western Australia. According to diamond expert Grant Mobley, “Believe it or not, 80 to 90% of the world’s pink diamonds have been found in a single place, the Argyle Diamond Mine.” He says, “At its peak, the number of pink diamonds found here in one year couldn’t fill a glass of champagne.”

While the mine was responsible for producing over 90% of the world’s natural pink diamonds, fewer than 0.1% of diamonds mined at Argyle were pink.

At its peak, the number of pink diamonds found here in one year couldn’t fill a glass of champagne.

Often referred to as Argyle Pinks, these diamonds ranged in color from soft blush to deep purplish-pink. However, the Argyle Mine closed in 2020. With the primary source gone, the supply of these rare gems has dwindled dramatically, making them even more precious.

According to Sotheby’s, pink diamonds were first discovered in India in the Kollur mine within the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, which was part of the legendary Golconda kingdom during the early 17th century.

While they have also been discovered in locations like Brazil, South Africa, and Canada, none of these sources produces them in significant quantities. Without a primary source like Argyle, they have become one of the scarcest and most valuable gemstones in the world.

In June, Christie’s held the Magnificent Jewels auction in New York that made history with the help of a legendary pink diamond ring.

The Marie-Thérèse Pink diamond, a 10.38-carat kite-shaped fancy purple-pink diamond mounted by legendary jeweler JAR. This exceptional stone, named after French royal Marie Thérèse and rumored to have ties to Marie Antoinette, is as rich in provenance as it is in color. The Marie-Thérèse Pink diamond ring sold for $13.98 million, setting a new world auction record for both a fancy purple-pink diamond and for a jewel designed by JAR. The sale firmly establishes the Marie-Thérèse Pink diamond as one of the most important and talked-about diamonds ever to appear at auction.

The Princie Diamond, the Eden Rose Diamond, the CTF Pink Star Diamond, the Graff Pink, Daria-i-Noor, and the Williamson Pink Star are just a few more famous pink diamonds to make auction history.

What to Look for in a Pink Diamond Ring

Purchasing a pink diamond ring is an investment in rarity, beauty, and history. Because each stone is unique, several factors influence its value:

Color Intensity: Color is the most important factor when selecting a pink diamond. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades them based on intensity, using categories such as Faint, Very Light, Light, Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid, and Fancy Deep. The more vibrant and saturated the hue, the more valuable the diamond.

Secondary Hues: Pure pink are the most sought-after, but many also have secondary tones such as purple, orange, or brown. While purple-pink diamonds can be incredibly desirable, brownish-pink diamonds are generally less valuable.

Cut and Shape: To enhance their color and brilliance, they are often cut into cushion cut, oval, pear, and radiant shapes rather than traditional round brilliants. The right cut maximizes the stone’s color saturation, making it appear richer and more vibrant.

Carat Weight: Because natural specimens are incredibly rare, they are typically found in smaller sizes. Even stones under one carat can command premium prices. As the carat weight increases, so does the rarity and value of the diamond.

Certification: A GIA certificate is essential when purchasing a pink diamond from a trusted retailer. It verifies the stone’s authenticity, natural origin, and color grading. Given the rising presence of lab-grown and treated diamonds in the market, certification is key to ensuring you are investing in a truly natural diamond.
