Just about everything Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu’s character, Sylvie Grateau, says and does on Emily in Paris as the owner of a luxury marketing agency, exudes a sassy and imperious attitude. She walks with a confident bounce in her step, head held high, elbow bent, and wrist flapping in the air. Her talk, or um dialogue, cuts through any nonsense that Emily (Lily Collins) is up to.

One time, when Emily pitched McDonald’s as a client for the launch of the McBaguette in France, Sylvie exasperatedly told her, “Emily, the only baguettes I am interested in are diamonds.” Another time, while walking down the street with Emily, Sylvie pointedly finishes her saying, “If you keep smiling like that, people are going to think you are stupid.”

Her perfect delivery of the sharp lines right down to the physicality of the performance, might lead you to believe that Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu had an edge to her personality. Au contraire.

The veteran actress, whose career stretches back to the 1980s when she was nominated for a César Award—France’s equivalent of an Oscar—for her role in the comedy Three Men and a Cradle, has a warm and welcoming personality. She does, however, share one quality with Sylvie: an enviable sense of style.

I sat down with Leroy-Beaulieu in Los Angeles to talk about her approach to jewelry. As an ambassador for Pomellato, she had traveled to the City of Angels to attend the opening of the Italian firm’s new Rodeo Drive boutique, as well as a star-studded dinner at the Sunset Tower Hotel.

Only Natural Diamonds: You have said that Emily in Paris represents what Americans expect Paris to be. It’s funny because Rodeo Drive, where the Pomellato boutique is located, and the Sunset Tower Hotel are similar expressions of Los Angeles. They reflect an Old Hollywood glamour that people expect here. Does being in Los Angeles, or perhaps these locations, influence your style compared to, say, an event in Paris?

Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu: I’m laughing because my daughter always makes fun of me when I give her clothes, and I say, “That’s great for London.” I think it’s very subconscious when I pack, but it’s also what I am feeling. Maybe that’s because I’m an actor, so the context is always important and the vibe of the people.

Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu: Fashion, Jewelry & Family

OND: By Los Angeles winter standards, it’s a little chilly tonight, with temperatures around 60 degrees. That makes your strapless, leather Tod’s dress perfect.

PLB: Yes, I was going to add weather is important. I don’t like to be cold or too hot. So I always try to think of what’s going to be comfortable and beautiful because you don’t want to suffer through a night. A little bit, maybe, but not much.

OND: I’m looking at your Jimmy Choos.

PLB: I was going to say, because of my shoes.

OND: Your mother, Françoise Laurent, was an actress. She also designed accessories, including jewelry, for Dior. What did she teach you about jewelry?

PLB: My mother had a sense of humor in the way she dressed and the way she created jewelry. As a kid, I was quite fascinated. It’s ingrained in me now, of course, because that’s something that I was raised with. A sense of magic, like the character in Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, is also important.

OND: The Pomellato Precious Spring Ring belt you chose to wear tonight from the new High Jewelry collection truly has magic. Tell me about the process of choosing this jewel.

PLB: When my stylist Clément Lomellini and I saw the collection, we  walked by the belt and thought “Oohhh.” It was love at the first moment. They don’t do these kind of pieces a lot.

The work is incredible. It’s flashy, but it’s not. I mean, it is covered with diamonds, but it’s not finicky in any way. It’s completely modern and amazing.

Clément and I talked about it a lot. Many times he said, “Okay, we’re going to wear it for this,” and then it didn’t happen until we had this event in Los Angeles, and I said, okay, this is the time here.

OND: I love the way you styled the Spring Ring belt with the diamond and gold bangles, earrings, and rings from the Iconica collection.

PLB: Iconica is very easy to wear. It’s so simple yet very sophisticated and strong. These are my dream rings, really.

OND: Okay, so, you’re very dictatorial…

PLB: Am I?

OND: Yes, on Emily in Paris.

PLB: Perhaps a little in real life, too.

OND: So, from that place, what advice can you give people about style, specifically jewelry, as it enhances?

PLB:
Well, you know, as I said, comfort is really important. I can’t go gardening with these jewels I am wearing, but I can do a lot. And also, it’s this thing about, you know, beauty, but not beauty that wants to show off. It’s this Italian elegance of Pomellato that is just thrown out there. It’s a matter-of-fact kind of thing. It’s like, oh, here I am.
