Think back to your earliest memory with diamond jewellery — it’s likely that you saw your mother or grandmother remove her treasured earrings or necklace from a locked drawer in her wardrobe, and quickly put it away. Or maybe, you witnessed someone from your family wear it to a wedding or formal occasion, never to be seen again till the next important event.

Natural diamond jewellery has always held a special place in our lives, but it’s been stored out of sight. Today, we’re pairing our favourite pieces with T-shirts and denims, layering them with athleisure sets and truly, bringing them out of our closets. “I see a lot of millennials shopping for everyday diamonds,” says Rujuta Vaidya, fashion editor and former digital editor, Vogue India. “There’s two reasons behind it, one primarily being that it’s drilled in our heads that fine jewellery is always a good investment. Secondly, disposable incomes have gone higher so treating yourself to a piece of jewellery is normalised. You don’t need to wait for inheritance or gifting to celebrate yourself.” Also, when your natural diamond jewellery pieces hold emotional significance, you have even more reason to take to them often. “I love jewellery, and jewellery I can wear everyday,” says Priyanka Kapadia Badani, creative director and fashion stylist.

“For me, my jewels are a reminder of special moments and people, and I want to be reminded of them everyday.”

#OOTD everyday: Natural diamonds for work and play

When making the shift to incorporate diamond jewels into your daily style, “start small,” says Vaidya. “I am always conscious when I add on new bling. It takes some time for me to soften up or familiarise with it. I would suggest trying to find pieces that blend well with your existing collection so the addition is not too stark.” Badani recommends starting off with hoops or a diamond tennis necklace. “The necklace is my new favourite and is the perfect layering piece.” Since there are no rules, the pieces you pick should be the ones that are right for you and your aesthetic. “If you like a celebrity or an influencer’s style, study the nuances and try to put together a moodboard for yourself. It always gets easier when you have pre-existing visual cues,” suggests Vaidya.

#DiamondsAndTees: The coolest collaboration

Taking a casual, everyday outfit up a notch has never been easier, especially something as versatile as a comfortable T-shirt. “I feel that layering real diamonds in your jewellery is a real treat,” creative director and fashion stylist Anaita Shroff Adajania tells us as one of the rules to break when wearing diamonds. “If you have beautiful diamonds, all you need is a T-shirt. Who needs fancy clothes when you have real diamonds? Layer it, be fearless.”

Vaidya recommends trying thin necklaces, stacked bracelets and mini huggies when wearing your everyday T-shirts and denims. “I tend to stick with my engagement ring, wedding band and tennis bracelet for a casual look. Depending on the occasion you can opt for danglers or a tennis necklace to refine your look.”  For Badani, it’s key that your everyday diamond jewellery feels comfortable, like a second skin. “Pick your favourite type of jewellery — whether that is a bracelet, necklace or diamond hoops. Opt for good quality natural diamond jewellery in classic designs that will see you through many years rather than going for trendy pieces. Having said that, don’t limit your diamond pieces to only solitaires or big investment pieces, choose the ones you would like to wear everyday. The beauty is that you never need to remove them.”

Mix it up: Personalised diamond stacks

“Over the last few years, I have started collecting jewels I want to wear everyday — diamond hoops, tennis necklaces and my tennis bracelet have become my essentials,” says Badani. “These classics are always on me, styled with other gold jewels and even some beaded jewels.” Vogue India’s former fashion director is a fan of stacking her natural diamonds with other jewellery that she has special memories associated with. “I love mixing my favourite pieces together to create a personalised stack. The stack could contain anything from a thread bracelet from my favourite travels or a beaded necklace to even my grandmother’s vintage gold pieces.”

“I recently got multiple piercings on my ears which I love styling with different sized diamond hoops. The outfit doesn’t matter anymore; my everyday jewels are on me at all times. And you should invest in pieces that are classic and look good with jeans, sweats or a sari.” The pieces she wears every single day, without a doubt — “My Hanut Singh diamond talisman pendant and tennis bracelets.”

You may be someone who loves switching up their stack everyday, or prefers sticking to their go-to natural diamond pieces — either way, there’s never been a better time to wear your diamonds with your favourite everyday tops and T-shirts, and have fun with them!
