How to Choose Wedding Earrings
The earrings a bride wears are often dictated by her dress. Strapless gowns pair nicely with diamond drop earrings, hoops, or a statement piece. Gowns with a higher neck or sleeves are best suited to studs or cluster earrings. If she’s wearing a more minimalist dress style, why not jazz up the look with chandelier earrings?
Shelley Brown, our in-house wedding expert and former editor at bridal magazine The Knot has some ideas on where to start when searching for wedding earrings. “Start with the dress,” she encourages. “Your wedding gown sets the tone for your entire look—so before you even think about accessories, decide on the style, neckline, fabric, and overall vibe.” From there, she recommends brides think about the visual balance of the look. For example, a strapless or sweetheart neckline leaves room for statement earrings, while high necklines call for more delicate pieces.
“Your hairstyle and veil also play a role,” she adds. “If you’re wearing your hair up, consider dramatic earrings; if it’s down and loose, studs or ear climbers might be the better move. Ultimately, your jewelry should enhance, not compete with, your outfit and reflect your personal style. Think of it as the finishing touch that ties everything together.”
Styles of Diamond Wedding Earrings
According to Brown, diamond studs or diamond and pearl drops are among the most classic wedding earrings a bride could wear. “They’re chic, understated, and work beautifully with just about every dress silhouette, neckline, and hairstyle,” she says. “Classic doesn’t have to mean boring—it means it transcends the trends.”
If a bride is opting for a statement-making look with her earrings, Brown recommends “shoulder-grazing diamond chandeliers, sculptural diamond drops, or bold diamond ear cuffs.” Dramatic earrings are the perfect way to add a wow factor if the bride’s dress is minimalist or if her hair is swept up.
Plenty of modern brides don’t want to fit into the classic bridal look and instead opt for something that will make them stand out from the rest. “Unexpected shapes, mixed metals, asymmetry—this is your chance to get creative,” says Brown of the perfect wedding earrings for the anti-bride. “Whether it’s leaning into the well-curated ear with many earrings stacked up, or even a cool vintage find that’s one of a kind, the key is choosing something that feels like you.”
