Inside Carrie Bradshaw’s Jewelry Box In ‘And Just Like That’ and ‘Sex and The City’

Throughout Sex and the City and And Just Like That…, Sarah Jessica Parker’s iconic character Carrie Bradshaw has long held natural diamond jewelry close to her heart.

And just like that…season 3 of the Sex and the City reboot is coming to our screens on May 29. The HBO spinoff series continues to follow the ultimate fashion-obsessed sex columnist-turned-podcaster Carrie Bradshaw and her pals. Sarah Jessica Parker’s iconic character is known for her countless fan-favorite outfits and diamond jewels that live in our head rent-free (even cheaper than Carrie’s rent-stabilized West Village apartment).
Styled by costume designer Patricia Field, the original HBO series Sex and the City was known for its immaculate designer wardrobe. Now, Molly Rogers’ costume department on And Just Like That… continues its fashion-forward legacy.
Sarah Jessica Parker has been known to channel Carrie Bradshaw’s iconic fashion sense. The actress told Vogue that she “kept every single solitary thing” from the series. Airing on HBO for six seasons between 1998 and 2004 before its two feature films, Parker told the outlet she has all the original costumes in her own storage, organized according to episode and scene.
Creative Director of the legendary Fred Leighton estate and contemporary jeweler in New York, Rebecca Selva spoke to Only Natural Diamonds about Carrie Bradshaw’s memorable jewelry box throughout both series and the two films. “Seeing how the jewelry adds to the character and adds to the moment and expresses the character’s style and personality has been wonderful,” she says. “[Sarah Jessica Parker] loves jewelry and appreciates the unique character of pieces,” Selva explains.

Carrie Bradshaw’s Signature Nameplate ‘Carrie’ Necklace
While far from the originator of the trend, the nameplate necklace hit the “mainstream” once it was featured in the HBO hit series Sex and the City. Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, was known for her fantastic wardrobe and jewelry box. As iconic as her beloved Manolo Blahnik heels and Fendi baguette bags, the gold and diamond “Carrie necklace,” became synonymous with the stylish character, inspiring countless “dupes” throughout the show’s six-season run.
The necklace features a diamond, dotting the “i” in Carrie for good measure. Costume designer Patricia Field has credited “kids in the neighborhood” around her New York City boutique as the inspiration for the jewel.
According to author and curator at The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Elizabeth Way, the nameplate necklace was seen as a signifier of a coming-of-age, or a rite of passage, among Black, Latino, and Italian-American youth culture. She tells Only Natural Diamonds that the nameplate was “a part of the everyday fashion landscape” that Patricia Field was observing in New York City. “Taking that inspiration and styling it on Sarah Jessica Parker definitely introduced it to mainstream audiences who might have been unfamiliar with just how prevalent and traditional it was in New York and other cities.”
Let us not forget: When Carrie runs off to Paris with her Russian artist love interest, Aleksandr Petrovsky, in the final season, she loses the iconoclastic jewel. He decides to replace the priceless necklace for her. “I know this is not the Carrie necklace, but it’s a necklace for Carrie.” Luckily, she discovers a hole in her vintage Dior purse, where her Carrie name necklace reveals itself.

Carrie Bradshaw’s Asscher-Cut Diamond Engagement Ring from Aidan Shaw
In the season four episode, “Change of A Dress,” Carrie Bradshaw stands in front of a fountain in Central Park with her fiancé, Aidan Shaw. Wearing a white strapless Badgley Mischka gown with her diamond engagement ring subversively worn around her neck, Carrie and Aiden break off their engagement.
Let’s rewind for a moment. Aiden actually purchased two diamond engagement rings for Carrie. In the episode, “Just Say Yes,” Carrie accidentally discovers a small pear-shaped diamond on an artsy gold band, prompting her to immediately throw up. She tells the ladies at lunch, “The ring was not good.” It was just wasn’t her, she explains. “Aiden should have known that that ring wasn’t me.” Side note: Miranda helped to pick it out.
Later, when taking his dog Pete out for a late-night walk, Aiden gets down on one knee, proposing with a much better natural diamond. When Carrie opens the ring box, she gleefully accepts the proposal, surprised at the beauty of the ring. Instead of the pear-shaped diamond, it’s a solitaire Asscher-cut diamond, weighing roughly four carats on a minimalistic band. Side note: Samantha helped to pick it out.
After some cold feet, hives, apartment pains, and a “missing bride gene,” Carrie hesitantly slid her ring onto a chain necklace instead of wearing it on her finger at the charity fundraiser, the Black and White Ball. Her explanation? It was “closer to her heart” that way.
While Aiden was rightfully concerned with Carrie’s consequential styling, her diamond engagement ring looked perfectly fashionable around her neck.

Carrie Bradshaw’s Fred Leighton Diamond Chandelier Earrings
In the same episode, Carrie ironically looks as bridal as ever, with her golden locks swept up in a dramatic updo to better show off the real star of the scene: a dazzling pair of Fred Leighton natural diamond chandelier earrings.
Rebecca Selva told Only Natural Diamonds, “These diamond earrings by Fred Leighton are amazing!” She says, “The fringe of diamond briolettes gave them their unique character–lightness, movement, and incredible sparkle as the diamond briolettes catch the light from every angle.”
Briolettes are one of the earliest diamond cuts, and these vintage-inspired earrings by Fred Leighton were both ahead of their time and influenced by the past. Selva explains, “They had a 19th century and also Indian inspiration.” She says, “Sarah Jessica wore them on numerous occasions on the red carpet, imbuing the earrings with her incredible style.”
The earrings became a lucky talisman for the actress off-screen. After wearing the earrings to the season three premiere of the HBO series in New York City, SJP made a habit of wearing them to several award ceremonies, where she often took home the prize. The actress wore her character’s diamond chandelier earrings to the 2000 Golden Globes, to host the MTV Movie Awards in 2000, the 2001 Golden Globes, the 2001 SAG Awards, the opening night of the Broadway production of The Producers in 2001, and the Wonder of the World showing in New York City in 2001. They have yet to make an appearance in And Just Like That…—but you never know.

Carrie Bradshaw’s Horseshoe Necklace
Carrie has always loved a symbolic diamond pendant, on Sex and the City and And Just Like That…. Costume designer Patricia Field looked to diamond horseshoe necklaces by the now defunct jewelry label, Mia & Lizzie. A signature jewel for Carrie throughout season four, the fashionista would often layer at least three lucky diamond horseshoe pendant necklaces at once.
“Sarah Jessica liked the horseshoe because it was feminine, and as a fan of vintage, she loved our take on the Victorian charm,” Lizzie Scheck said at the time. The designer continues to create the horseshoe jewels on her own.

Carrie Bradshaw’s Diamond Verdura Target Brooch
In the 2008 Sex and the City film, Carrie stomps the Manhattan pavement in her Manolos, alongside Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte. She wore a cream Ralph Lauren suit, a pink striped button-down, and a black tie with a natural diamond Verdura Target brooch. Originally designed in 1940, the 18-karat yellow gold and platinum pin with round diamonds was beloved by New York society swans Millicent Rogers and Dorothy Paley. The socialites were known to wear the brooch with the matching pair of Verdura Target earrings.
Carrie Bradshaw’s Black Diamond Ring from Mr. Big
In the 2010 Sex and the City cinematic sequel, Carrie and Mr. Big are already married (after that disastrous first attempt in the first film). After a fight, Big gifts Carrie a long-overdue 5-carat natural black diamond ring in a final scene of the movie. When she asks him, “Why’d you get a black diamond?” Big replies, “Because you’re not like anyone else.” To which she joked, “That’s a relief. I thought you were gonna say it’s the color of my soul.”
While production was on the hunt for black diamond rings, jewelry designer Itay Malkin anonymously submitted two options for consideration. Sarah Jessica Parker and writer/director, Michael Patrick King chose his design out of over 20 other big-time jewelry designers. Malkin worked in collaboration with Parker and Patricia Field, on the final design. The 5-carat round-cut black diamond was set in 18-karat white gold hidden halo surrounded by 78 round natural white pavé diamonds equaling 0.43 carats. Will the legendary engagement ring make an appearance in And Just Like That…? We couldn’t help but wonder.
Carrie Bradshaw’s Marlo Laz Spiked Heart Diamond Necklace
In the first season of And Just Like That…, Carrie debuts her most significant diamond jewel of the HBO spinoff series. The newly minted podcaster wears the Marlo Laz Spike Heart Pavé Necklace.
Since the beginning of Sex and the City, our fashionable protagonist has worn a myriad of heart pendant necklaces. Her favorites include her Kenneth Jay Lane red enamel heart pendant necklace, and a gold bubble heart locket she wore throughout season five of the original series.
