It’s no surprise, that jewelry designer Sara Weinstock’s daughter Katie shares her love of diamonds. After all, Katie grew up borrowing fabulous pieces from her mom’s jewelry box. Both mom and daughter share that easygoing, elegant Southern California spirit, a perfect canvas for layers of Sara’s contemporary designs including diamond lariat necklaces, stylish tennis bracelets, and sparkling pinky rings.

Here, Sara and Katie share their favorite diamond jewels and reveal what makes a great Mother’s Day gift.

What’s the most meaningful jewelry gift your mother gave you?

Katie: A pair of diamond studs that had belonged to her mother, so three generations have worn them. They are timeless and beautiful, and I love them.

What are your favorite diamond jewels?

Katie: I love the Sara Weinstock Eternity Diamond Bolo bracelet and diamond pinky rings. They are great for layering or alone, and they go with everything.

What’s the piece you never take off?

Katie: The Donna diamond necklace. I sleep in it.

What have you recently borrowed from your mother?

Katie: I plucked the Donna ring off my mother’s finger at dinner the other night.

What do you suggest for diamond Mother’s Day gifts?

Sara: My diamond Lariat necklace because it goes with everything. I also love a diamond choker, which I would be happy to receive. And, the new Lucia necklace is fun because you can wear it alone or add different charms and build a collection over time.

What was the best Mother’s Day you were given?

Sara: When my kids were little, they made pottery and art projects for me, and those were the best gifts because they were made with so much love.

What’s the Mother’s Day gift you want?

Sara: I’ve always wanted a diamond eternity ring, and I’m finally having one custom made with 13 emerald-cut diamonds, each one carat in size. I might have it by Mother’s Day.

When did you love for jewelry start?

Sara: My aunt was a collector of estate jewelry, and when I was young, she would bring over a satchel of jewelry and lay it on the floor and tell stories about where she purchased them and why she bought them. It brought us together, and it began my love of estate jewelry and diamonds, which later evolved into contemporary jewelry.

What is the key piece every woman should have?

Sara: A single line diamond tennis necklace. It’s extraordinarily simple yet elegant, and you can’t go wrong it.

What are the pieces you never take off?

Sara: I take my jewelry off every night and start the next day with a blank canvas. I put my jewelry on first and build my outfit around the jewels.

What are the prized pieces you will hand down to your daughter?

Sara: A pair of old mine cut diamonds, five carats each. I may give one to my daughter, and the other to my son. I always wondered about the women who wore them before. I love that there is so much history behind these stones and that they had a past life.
